St Ives CC Press Report
28th June 2010
St Ives Cycling
Club's weekly time trial championships saw record times on Wednesday evening as
the riders capitalized on the favourable weather. Of the 23 starters half of the competitors
recorded their best times for the quiet Sawtry course, making the most of the
warm weather, still winds, and favourable atmospheric conditions.
The biggest gain
was for veteran rider Terry Cooke, who, having spent years organizing and
competing in the club championship, went 6 seconds under his self imposed
target time of 26 minutes. Not only did
Terry have the satisfaction of a 'personal best', but his impressive
performance also saw him win the veterans competition. In the age related handicapping system he
lead his nearest rival, Paul Davis, by over 2 minutes and was over 5 minutes
quicker than his handicap time.
Vivien Parish led
the ladies home in a personal best time of 29 minutes 12 seconds ahead of
running specialist Gillian Peck.
On the bigger
stage of the national championships, Avril Swan took on the countries best
riders in the National 50 mile time trial competition near Petersfield. Only one week after breaking the National
Irish Record for 100 miles, Avril scooped the bronze medal in the 50 miles
competition, with a time of 1 hour 55 minutes and 39 seconds.
