St Ives CC Press Report 14th Sept 2009
St Ives Cycling Club members took on Britain's best bike riders at the British Time Trial Championships.
Paul Davis, Avril Swan and Paul Verlander rode against Olympic medalists around the undulating Buckinghamshire course last Sunday, which is designed to appeal to time trial riders and road racers alike.
In the men's category highest place for St Ives was time trial specialist Paul Davis, finishing 16th in class in a time of 49 minutes 8 seconds. Davis was enjoying the event, he said "it's not every day you get to race against Olympic Gold Medal winner Bradley Wiggins". It came as no surprise to any of the competitors that Wiggins demonstrated his abilities by comfortably winning the event.
Paul Verlander, riding for team Endura, was in the same age category as fellow club member Davis, finishing just one place behind him in 17th place in a time 50 minutes 18 seconds.
The highlight of local interest came from St Ives member Avril Swan, also riding for team Endura, who finished an extremely impressive 8th overall in the women's event. Swan was equally excited to compete against such a high quality field including Olympic champion Emma Pooley. Swan who has only just returned from winning a Silver medal in the World Masters in Austria blitzed the course to reinforce her reputation as one of the countries top female cyclists.
This week the cycling club was proud to announce it's new 'home', based at Hemingford Pavilion, the gym facilities and showers were widely appreciated by the membership on the opening night, while the less competitive members equally enjoyed the bar facilities!
